The Rosemary Leitch Garden Party
Rosemary Leitch Garden Party
Rosemary Leitch is warmly remembered within the New England Conservatorium of Music (NECOM) community as a dedicated and generous advocate for classical music. Her unwavering enthusiasm for the young musicians of the Armidale region helped create an environment where students could flourish, succeed, and grow with confidence.
Rosemary’s encouragement and philanthropy played a significant role in the development and ongoing success of the Armidale Youth Orchestras, enabling these ensembles to thrive into the vibrant programs they are today.
After moving to Armidale in 1960 with her husband, Dr David Leitch, Rosemary became a prominent figure in the city’s cultural and civic life. She served as Armidale’s first female Mayor from 1988 to 1993 and was a passionate supporter of both the arts and youth music through her involvement with PLC Armidale and NECOM.
As a generous patron of the Armidale Youth Orchestras, Rosemary established the Rosemary Leitch Garden Parties during her tenure as Mayor. These much-loved events were originally hosted in her garden on Garibaldi Street.
Since 2017, the Garden Parties have continued at the Chevy Chase homestead in Dangarsleigh, PLC Armidale and other gardens in town, allowing the tradition to live on in beautiful settings that reflect Rosemary’s love of community, music, and celebration.
After a long, full, and meaningful life, Rosemary passed away in December 2022 at the age of 92.
We look forward to the Rosemary Leitch Garden Parties continuing for many years to come, honouring Rosemary’s remarkable legacy and her lasting influence on youth music in Armidale.
